PAN has one main purpose: to raise and train leaders in Christ who are HIV fact-spreaders in the community.
To achieve the first part of our purpose of developing Christian leaders, we use the History Makers curriculum used by churches all around the world to strengthen leadership and develop new leaders for Christ. We believe that our task is not only to ensure that students working with us become good leaders, we wish for the students attending our programming to become leaders as well. So we make transparent the necessary aspects of a good leader and challenge our students to live accordingly. Through the History Makers curriculum, students begin with the premise that their lives are ministries and so they learn how to find God's purpose for these ministries, set goals for it, and maintain their faith in the Lord.
We believe that training in this area is essential because of our mission to teach about HIV from a Christian perspective. If we are to transmit knowledge to others, we first must acknowledge that all wisdom comes from God and as Proverbs 9:10 says, "The fear of the Lord is the beginning of wisdom." So, first and foremost, we encourage our students in their attempt to humble themselves to the one who is the author and finisher of our faith.
"Each month, we take up a topic such as HIV statistics, our bodies, how HIV spreads, etc. and then invite speakers from the local area hospital HIV departments to enumerate upon the topic..."
Then the second part of our purpose is to train HIV fact-spreaders. There is so much false information spreading about HIV that we saw a great need for facts about the disease. In order to train them in this area, we have developed our own curriculum informed by several books for young people about HIV as well as up to date research reports. Each month, we take up a topic such as HIV statistics, our bodies, how HIV spreads, etc. We then invite speakers from the local area hospital HIV departments to enumerate upon the topic given their experience and training. In such forums, our students have the opportunity to discuss with these experts and ask questions to gain deeper understanding of each particular topic before going to share the information with their peers.
